An old friend of mine once told me:
“If you don’t invest in yourself, how can you expect anyone else to want to invest in you?”
Now, she was using this as an explanation for excessive shopping for clothes and jewelry (when she was dead broke) and in getting her hair done or her nails…while I hit up the Goodwill for all my clothes, did my own nails, and routinely piled my curls into a messy bun.
In a sense, she was telling me I wasn’t taking very good care of myself. (Or that she wanted me to look better if I was going to hang out with her.) Worse, that I wasn’t thinking of my own future. I wasn’t thinking—I’m worth it. And therefore, others were reciprocating by ignoring my value.
Perhaps it’s the “southern woman” inside of me—be humble, be giving, be sacrificing—that makes it so hard to do.
I think you can be humble and giving yet also invest of your time, energy, and money to better yourself, grow, and if you are like me—an entrepreneur—then you also need to invest in your business or craft.
You and your business cannot grow under a constant state of neglect.
Invest in yourself. How else can you grow as a human?
Sure you can grow in response to things that happen to you—or you can choose to grow in the direction you want. Proactively.
Here’s how I’m investing in myself lately…and you should too.
Investing in your work
Investing in your mind
Investing in your body
