Baby Reindeer Is the Groundbreaking Show of 2024
Thoughts on the powerful new Netflix drama series
If you haven’t heard the buzz yet about Netflix’s poignant new short series Baby Reindeer—you will. It’s heartbreaking. It’s emotive. It’s unforgettable.
In fact, I think it will sweep the awards for best acting and, well, everything else.
But the show should come with a long list of trigger warnings for viewers. It’s probably the most triggering thing I’ve seen on TV in years.
I signed into Netflix and randomly chose this show to watch from the list of recommendations. Without having any idea what I was about to watch. The show captivated me from the very beginning.
It took me two days to watch the seven-part series. After my binge was over—I had to take a long walk to clear my head.
I found the story to be haunting and shockingly real. The themes of the show are evoking conversation all over the interwebs. People relate to the story—which is based on the true life story of the main actor, Richard Gadd, who bravely portrays himself in the drama.
When you finish this binge — you won’t know whether to take a long walk, call a therapist or friend, or simply cry.—Christina M. Ward on Baby Reindeer
If you’ve seen the show, I welcome your thoughts and observations in the comments. Or comment if you need someone to talk to about the show. I understand. When I finished it I was desperate to find other people to talk to about it.
And that’s the point of this bewildering and absorbing drama—to get us all talking about things. Dark things. Things that keep people isolated in their pain.
It’s time we let them speak—and we listen.
